Committed SDLP activistDr Deehan is a committed long term SDLP activist and was elected as a Councillor for Omagh Town in 2001, defending her seat in 2005. She is currently Chair of the Health Committee, Omagh District Council and is past chair of Omagh District Policing Partnership. She is a member of the Hospital Review Steering Group and has campaigned tirelessly for the retention of Acute Services at Tyrone County Hospital contributing to many ministerial delegations on the issue and in a delegation to the Royal College of Surgeons, London, in 2006. Dedicated local doctorJo currently lives in Killyclogher, Omagh with her husband Michael and their six children. She is originally from Dromore, Co Tyrone and is a past pupil of Loreto Grammar School, Omagh. She graduated with a PhD from Queen’s University, Belfast in 1980 and from Trinity College, Dublin with a degree in Medicine in 1987. She is a former Lecturer in Physiology in The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and is currently a General Practitioner in Omagh Health Centre. Her special interests include mental health, women’s health and child protection. She is currently a member of Sperrin Lakeland Child Protection Panel and a former member of the Sperrin Lakeland Suicide Prevention Forum and Domestic Violence Forum. As a junior doctor she was the N. Ireland GP Trainee Representative on the BMA – Junior Doctor’s Committee and General Medical Services Committee and successfully campaigned for the reduction in the excessive hours worked by junior doctors. |

Human rights campaignerDr Deehan is proud of the ethos, principles and policies of the SDLP, founded as they are on a bedrock of human rights, civil and religious liberties, respect for human life and dignity and the development of a peaceful and prosperous society with parity of esteem for all traditions. She continues to uphold the rights of the people of West Tyrone to appropriate Acute Hospital and Community Services. She is a sought-after public speaker and regular contributor to radio. |
