Together we can achieve real progress

Dear Voter

I am proud to stand before you as your SDLP candidate in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

As a GP and District Councillor, I have been privileged to gain a unique insight into the many issues which affect people in their daily lives. Some of these issues may mean the difference between life and death, eg Acute Hospital Services, safety on our roads and in our communities and educating our young people about the dangers of alcohol and drugs.

Other issues affect the quality of our lives and our ability to achieve our full potential eg education provision, economic development, cost of living and protecting our rural way of life.

I believe I have the skills, energy, focus and determination to ensure, with the help of a strong SDLP team in the Assembly, that these issues are fully addressed.

Your concerns are my priority. Together we can achieve REAL PROGRESS

With best wishes
J .A. Deehan

SDLP leader praises commitment of Jo Deehan

“The people of West Tyrone have an opportunity to elect a young woman with energy, dynamism and commitment who will really put West Tyrone at the top of the priority list for the new Assembly. I look forward to welcoming Jo to a strong SDLP Assembly team and together we will deliver real progress for West Tyrone.” Mark Durkan, MP, SDLP leader

Councillor Deehan selected as SDLP candidate for West Tyrone

Councillor Deehan is “absolutely delighted” to have been selected as an SDLP candidate for West Tyrone to contest the forthcoming Assembly Elections. She said: “I believe these will prove to be good elections for the SDLP. We are asking the Nationalist people to give us their mandate to enable the devolved institutions to get up and running again. Nowhere is the adverse effect of Direct Rule more apparent than in West Tyrone where we continue to suffer from poor infrastructure, poor economic growth and the progressive stripping of Acute Hospital Services from Tyrone County Hospital. As a committed hospital campaigner, I am determined to seek an urgent review of the decision regarding the location of the new Acute Hospital for the South West and to end the disgraceful rundown of services at Tyrone County Hospital. I am acutely aware of the unjust and inadequate provision of Health Care Services in West Tyrone and I am determined to address this inequity."

Jo continued: "I am proud of the contribution the SDLP has made to the creation of a peaceful and just society. I am particularly proud of the position which my party has taken on policing where we have paved the way to an inclusive, impartial and transparent police service. As past chair of Omagh DPP I know the importance of involving the community in policing issues and priorities. Those who truly care about the welfare of people care about policing.

"A peaceful, lawful society underpins a safe and vibrant community. We face major challenges in addressing the scourge of violence, crime, drug and alcohol misuse in our society, areas in which we rely on a modern and acceptable police force.

"I am looking forward to the challenge of the forthcoming elections with energy, enthusiasm and determination because I am totally convinced that the SDLP is truly “a better way to a better Ireland”."

SDLP has largest slate of women candidates

SDLP Councillor Josephine Deehan said the SDLP is fielding by far the strongest slate of women candidates in the Assembly election.

She said: “At our rally in Belfast at the weekend the party leader, Mark Durkan MP, introduced what is by far the strongest slate of women candidates the north, and possibly the whole island of Ireland, has ever seen. We have more than doubled the proportion by comparison with the last Assembly election; we have broken through the glass ceiling by breaking through the 40 percent barrier. Most important of all, a clear majority of these candidates are in winnable seats. I am very pleased to be one of them.

“None of this happened by accident. The party has worked hard to boost the number of younger candidates and women candidates, and the results could be seen at the rally. The results are being seen in the campaign and I believe this will have a considerable impact in the new Assembly. Already, there is a new emphasis on issues with a direct family impact such as health, education, first-time buyers and the overall cost of living.”
